Room Parent Responsibilities
Thank you for signing up to be a room parent!
Each class has a Head Room Parent (position can be co-chaired) and Room Parent Volunteers (up to 3).
The Head Room Parent serves as a liaison between the teacher and the parents for classroom parties and events. The Room Parent Helpers assist the Head Room Parent(s) in planning and organizing the classroom parties and events.
Listed below are the fun responsibilities of the room parents.
- Organize classroom parties (4 total- Halloween, Winter, Valentine’s Day and End of Year/Teacher Gift)
- Designate a classroom photographer and submit class photos for yearbook.
- Coordinate the Teacher Appreciation Day Gift (to be determined by the committee). Last year was a placemat signed by all the children and laminated.
- Create a banner for Walk-a-thon with children. Supplies and ideas will be given.
- Create a themed basket and/or optional classroom project for Walk-a-thon. Ideas will be given.
It is not your responsibility to organize everything by yourself, nor spend all your own money doing so. Please ask your Room Parent Volunteers and your classroom parents for help. Remember there are a number of working parents that may not be able to volunteer during the party but would love to donate items needed to create a successful party, teacher gift or auction project. It is very important to give other parents an opportunity to be involved.
Communication between Room Parents, class parents, and teachers needs to be discussed and arranged by each individual class. The lower grades work great with sign-up sheets at the door but the older grades do better with phone calls and/or email. If you are the Head Room Parent, please set up a time to meet with your teacher and find out things like: what type of food he/she prefers in class, what and how many activities and or crafts they want, if it is okay to bring younger preschoolers, etc. They tend to know what works and what doesn’t.
Asking parents for money donations can be tricky and uncomfortable at times. Keep in mind that not all parents are willing to donate money. Also, remember that ACPC will not reimburse any monies spent.
Flyers, invitations, etc. to be sent home must be pre-approved by the teacher and Mr. Kellison and/or Mrs. Rosenthal prior to distributing.
Here are some pointers to having a great year as a Room Parent:
- Communicate! Use the forms provided or create your own.
- Plan and Organize.
- Use the provided resources for ideas.
- Delegate! Don’t forget to assign duties amongst your room parents.
- Don’t pay for things all on your own. If you get little response or no help, then be comfortable with not doing it!
* Have fun! Remember, it’s for the children, but you can have fun too!
Contact Kelly Carroll, our Room Parent Coordinator, if you have any questions.
